How to transfer files using CuteFTP Client

3 min read

Introduction #

In this tutorial, we will guide you on how you can securely transfer files from your local computer to your web hosting account, and vice versa, via CuteFTP. Uploading and downloading files using CuteFTP is as easy as dragging and dropping them into the desired directory. In the following lines, we will show you how you can achieve that within a few simple steps.

Getting Started #

At this point, we do assume that you have CuteFTP already installed on your local computer and connected to your web hosting account.

Once you establish a successful connection, all your web files will be listed in the right panel, while the left panel will display your local files.

Uploading Files #

In order to upload file(s) or folder(s) to your web hosting account, you will first need to locate them by navigating through the left panel. Afterward, from the right panel, you will need to access the directory where you wish to upload them.  If you need to select multiple files/folders you can do that by pressing the “ctrl” (PC) / “command” (Mac) key on your keyboard and clicking on them. Once this is done, please right-click and select the “Upload” option.

Alternatively, you can also simply drag and drop the selected files/folders to the web directory under which you want to upload them.

Once the file upload is initiated, you will be able to track the progress in the “Queue Window” tab.  Please note that the transfer process duration will vary depending on the size of the files, therefore in some cases, it may take a long time to finish.

After the process is successfully completed, you will see the files/folders listed in the web directory. If some reason they are not visible, please make sure to click on the “Refresh” icon available at the top right toolbar.

In case you have uploaded a folder and it has not appeared even after you refreshed the page, this might be due to the configuration settings of CuteFTP. If this is the case, please right-click on the connection in question from the “Site Manager” tab and select “Properties” from the list of options. Under the “Actions” tab click on “Filter”, make sure to tick the “Enable server side filtering” checkbox and type “-L” into the “Remote Filter” field. Then hit “OK” and you should be all set.

Downloading Files #

Downloading files and folders from your web hosting account to your local computer works exactly the same way as uploading them. This time, you will need to locate the files by navigating through the right panel and ensure you are located in the folder where you want to download them in the left panel. Once this is done, you will need to right-click on the selected files/folders and choose the “Download” options.

Downloading files

Similarly to the previous example, you can always simply drag and drop the files/folders if it is more convenient for you.

File downloads are also recorded in the “Queue Window”, so you can track the progress if needed.

That is it – now you are familiar with the process of transferring files between your local computer and your web hosting account. FTP clients provide far more flexibility compared to most server-integrated File Managers, therefore we hope you have found the information in this tutorial useful.
